Etienne "Stephen" Dutilh of Dutilh & John Godfried Wachsmuth, Philadelphia Merchants

Profile image has his surname misspelled as Duthil, there no known instances of Stephen "Etienne" using that spelling other than this engraving.

Etienne Dutilh, 1748-1810.

Biographical / Historical:
Etienne Dutilh was born in Clairac, France, in November 1756 and emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1783. He established several merchant firms bearing his name upon his arrival. By 1784, the firm E. Dutilh & Co. was established and active in trade with the West Indies and ports throughout Europe.

In 1790, Dutilh partnered with John Godfried Wachsmuth and the pair operated the mercantile house of Dutilh and Wachsmuth. Their firm was mainly engaged in the trade of coffee, sugar, cocoa and logwood with the West Indies, Asia, and northern Europe.

A notice of dissolution of the firm E. Dutilh & Wachsmuth appeared in Philadelphia papers in mid-1797. Stephen Dutilh and John G. Wachsmuth each continued as merchants in Philadelphia.

Dutilh and his wife Catherine had three children: Edmund J. Dutilh (b. 1798), Edward Dutilh (1799-1833), and a daughter who died young. Etienne Dutilh died on February 26, 1810.

Near the end of the 18th century, Dutilh anglicized his first name to Stephen (see also founder Etienne Girard aka Stephen Girard).  Dutilh remained active as a merchant until his death in 1810.  His widow Catherine Madeleine married his former partner John G. Wachsmuth after his death and raised three sons in Germantown, Pa.
