March 18, 1773 Henry Guest autograph signed letter to merchants Samuel & William Vernon New Brunswick, NJ-RI Per Captain Van Emburgh, Shoes, West Indies. Letter carried by Captain Van Emburgh.
Henry Guest was a prominent tanner and apparently also employed or represented cordwainers, per this letter mentioning a dozen shoes destined for Jamaica. Tradition holds that at different times he hosted Thomas Paine and John Adams in his home. Additionally, though disputed by some today, his home later may have served as a wartime headquarters for British troops when they occupied New Brunswick.
