1790 1st NC US Senator Samuel Johnston signed letter to James Iredell re Supreme Court opening, nominated by Washington 6 days later
Letter signed Feb 2, 1790 by NC's 1st US Senator Samuel Johnston to his brother-in-law James Iredell (Iredell was married to Johnston's sister Hannah) regarding a possible Supreme Court opening. James Iredell was nominated by President George Washington 6 days later and he was confirmed by the Senate in May. He served until his death in 1799. Condition as pictured.
Senator Johnston's letter date line is New York, 2nd February, 1790. New York City's Federal Hall served as the meeting place for Congress from March 4, 1789 until late 1790. The Residence Act, a compromise to garner Southern support for the First United States Bank, was passed in July, 1790. This act required Congress to move to Philadelphia after its second session. Congress was finally moved to the City of Washington/Washington, D.C. in 1800.
