1827 stampless letter from Senator Ezekial F. Chambers from Washington DC to Jos. Wicker (sp) in Chestertown, Maryland. Light circular date stamped with free frank of E.F. Chambers as a US senator, with letter content also signed by Chambers regarding finances, legislative activity and the Vice President's committee in the House and the need for "a degree of delicacy with regards to Mr. Calhoun" (John C. Calhoun at this time was U.S. Vice President in administration of President John Quincy Adams).
Condition notes: Splitting at folds and wax seal damage likely done at time of letter opening as pictured.
Ezekiel Forman Chambers (1788-1867) represented Maryland in the US Senate from 1826-1834, he was a judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals from 1834 to 1851 and was active in the Maryland fugitive slave controversies of the 1850s.
He was elected president of the Southern Rights Convention of Maryland in February 1861 and unsuccessfully ran as a Democrat for Governor of Maryland in 1864.
