1861 July 12 Soldier's Letter with corresponding cover free-franked by NY 12th district Republican Congressman S. (Stephen) Baker (1861-1863). 

Union soldier letter from Corporal Bankson Taylor Morgan of the 9th NY Regiment New York Infantry, also known as the 9th New York Zouaves or Zoo Zoos.   Corporal Morgan's letter is addressed to his friend Theodore Hagaman, Brevoort House," New York City.    He also writes a nice message of sympathy to both Theodore and his brother HenrY Hagaman regarding news of their father's death he recently had seen in the papers.

Corporal Bankson T. Morgan later served as Lieutenant Colonel of New York's 54th Infantry Regiment, the "Schwarze Yaeger" or "Hiram Barney Black Rifles." 

Lieutenant Colonel Bankson Taylor Morgan was born in Reading, Berks County, Pa., May 17, 1841. Republican. School teacher; served in the Union Army during the Civil War (9th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment Zouaves & 54th NY Regiment Infantry), 1861-1865; coal dealer; assistant postmaster; lawyer; member of New York State Assembly from New York County 7th District, 1888.  Died March 29, 1913, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, buried in Menands, Albany County, New York.
